Help Ukrainians fleeing the invasion of their country

Alberta REALTORS® can help Ukrainians fleeing the invasion of their country for the safety of Canada. 

The Canadian government is providing Ukrainians with emergency travel authorization and temporary status to work and stay in Canada. As home to one of the largest Ukrainian populations outside of Ukraine, Alberta is expected to be a preferred destination for many fleeing their country. Since they are arriving outside the usual immigration protocols, these refugees don’t have the same access to Canada’s established newcomer support programs.

This is where AREA and its members can assist.

Do you or someone you know have a spare room or space to house Ukrainian refugees for a period of 6-12 months? Can you provide support in other ways, such as by offering financial donations, in-kind donations, supplies, transportation, or job support?

AREA has partnered with Rogers Communications Inc., Servus Credit Union, and the Calgary Mosaic Refugee Clinic, to assist and help support both hosts and refugees when they arrive.

Assistance and support will include, but will not be limited to*:

  • Pairing refugees with hosts
  • Financial assistance to hosts to help pay for food/incidentals for up to six (6) months
    • $300 per month for singles
    • $500 per month for couples/families
  • Mobile phones and Rogers network access for refugees
  • Banking support for refugees

AREA and its partners are making an initial commitment to extend this package to up to 50 families.

FAQs

What are the different ways REALTORS® can support the AREA Ukrainian Initiative?

REALTORS® can support the initiative in several ways. We are in search of:

    • Hosts to provide accommodation/housing
    • Financial donations
    • In-kind donations (E.g., Household items, toys, etc.)
    • Transportation
    • Job support
    • Airport pickup
    • Groceries and other supplies

I have accommodation available and would like to be a host? What are the next steps?

Hosts who apply via our intake form will be contacted by support staff via telephone to schedule a pre-screening. Once the pre-screening process has been completed, a match will be made by AREA support staff, followed by an introduction and exploratory video conference call to further determine suitability.

Am I able to donate in-kind rather than hosting? What sort of donations are accepted?

Yes, REALTORS® can donate:

    • Financially
    • In-kind
    • Transportation
    • Job support
    • Airport pickup
    • Groceries and other supplies

If/when a potential housing match is made, how will I be notified?

If/when a potential housing match is made, you will be notified via email and will have the opportunity to meet via video chat. At that time, you will also be connected with a local Settlement Counselor, who will provide direction and support around helping the newcomers “settle” into life in Canada.

How long will I be required to be a host?

Hosts can provide housing support for a minimum of 3 months and a maximum of 12 months.

How will AREA support me as a host?

AREA has partnered with Rogers Communications Inc., Servus Credit Union, and the Calgary Mosaic Refugee Clinic to create a robust package to help support both hosts and refugees when they arrive.

The package will include, but will not be limited to:

    • Pairing refugees with hosts
    • Financial assistance to hosts to help pay for food/incidentals for up to six (6) months.
      • $300 per month for singles
      • $500 per month for couples/families
    • Mobile phones and Rogers 4G network access for refugees
    • Banking support for refugees
