AREA-CREB® Consolidation Plan FAQ

Posted on November 15, 2022 by AREA Communications

When will the vote be?

The CREB® Board of Directors will call a Special General Meeting for March 15, 2023.

Why have a Special Meeting?

For the proposal to pass the CREB® membership it needs to achieve 66% support at a vote held at either an annual or a special general meeting. The CREB® Board felt a special meeting focused on this important proposal alone was preferable to adding this to the April AGM agenda.

Will all AREA members vote?

The proposal will affect CREB® members only. If passed, CREB® members will access their local board services directly through AREA. AREA members who belong to other local boards will continue to access their local board services through their local boards.

Why is CREB® doing this?

Member research has consistently shown the CREB® members are interested in contemplating a merger with AREA. Both the CREB® and AREA Boards felt the CREB® members should be given a choice to consolidate if they wanted to. The members will choose whether to retain the current structure or move to a different structure.

What is the benefit to CREB® members?

CREB® members will benefit in two main ways:

  1. Reduced Fees: A consolidation would reduce operational duplication and overhead costs between the two organizations. Those savings would be passed directly to the members.
  2. Choice: Members will be able to choose between two tiers of service – premium and core – allowing them to prioritize what matters most to them.

How much money would I save?

The two Boards of Directors are working through the details of the proposal. We are committed to sharing the fulsome details with members in early January.

Are other boards considering this?

AREA respects the diverse opinions of its members and the autonomy of its member Boards/ Associations. We remain committed to working with our Boards/ Associations in the members’ best interests. While CREB® members have consistently signalled their openness to one board, many other regions have signalled their preference to maintain separation between the local and provincial bodies.

AREA remains open to any discussions with its members and its member Boards/ Associations on how best to support Alberta REALTORS®.

Our membership work and live in Alberta, which we acknowledge as the traditional and ancestral lands of many peoples presently subject to Treaties 6, 7, and 8 – namely the Blackfoot Confederacy (Kainai, Piikani, and Siksika), the Cree, Dene, Saulteaux, Nakota Sioux, Stoney Nakoda and the Tsuu T’ina Nation, and the Métis People of Alberta. We recognize the many First Nations, Métis and Inuit who have cared for these lands for generations. We are grateful for the traditional Knowledge Keepers and Elders who are still with us today, and those who have gone before. We make this acknowledgement as an act of reconciliation and gratitude to those on whose territory we reside.
