Survey Invitation: The Dower Act – Repeal or Reform?

Posted on January 14, 2022 by AREA Communications in News

AREA’s current advocacy position is that modern legislation provides adequate protections to protect consumers, without the outdated Dower Act and removing the Act would allow consumers and the professionals serving them to address property transactions more efficiently and cost-effectively. You can read more here.

AREA has been discussing this topic with other stakeholders who are exploring the issue. One of these stakeholders is the Alberta Lawyers Research Institute (ALRI).

AREA members are invited to a short ALRI survey so exploring how the Dower Act impacts professionals.

Complete Survey

ALRI recently published two Reports for Discussion, which are available to the public on ALRI's website:

    • Dower Act: Consent to Disposition, Report for Discussion 36
    • Dower Act: Life Estate, Report for Discussion 37

ALRI’s project is now entering a final phase of consultation, and AREA’s Advocacy team will be sharing the feedback generated in the coming weeks. If you have any additional comments on dower, please send them to: advocacy@albertarealtor.ca.
